Course information
I first came to the Whitehawk Inn to do an Introduction to Manicure course. I had been told about the course by a friend. The staff were friendly and encouraged me to enrol on the two consecutive manicure courses. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford the equipment needed as I am on benefits, but a kit was provided. I enjoyed the course so much I decided to enrol at City College to do a manicure and Artificial Nail Structure course. I was very nervous and worried about the high cost of the equipment and uniform needed for the course. The gateway team at Whitehawk Inn helped me apply for an Access fund and helped with all the paperwork involved. Without their support I would not have had the confidence to continue.
I have now completed the course which I really enjoyed and passed successfully. I feel more confident now in doing other courses. I’m currently doing a make-up course which I am enjoying. These courses have given me more confidence and I feel less isolated. I have made new friends through doing these courses.

Romany Mark Bruce, the acclaimed Brighton sculptor and painter, has spoken of his support for this year’s Adult Learners’ Week, an annual week-long national campaign held each May. It aims to inspire adults to pursue learning opportunities whether it's catching up on skills not learnt at school, learning for work, learning at work, or learning for fun. Romany attended sculpture evening classes at the Connaught Centre, City College Brighton and Hove’s Adult & Community Learning campus, for seven years during the 1990’s. In September 2007, he was selected by public ballot to sculpt the centrepiece of a memorial to those who have died and those whose lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS.
