Portslade E2E students visit to Heart FM 17.06.10
On Thursday 17th June a group of students on E2E programmes from Portslade Community College went to visit Heart 102.4 & 103.5, the number one commercial broadcaster in Sussex, based in Brighton, to find out about working for a Radio station. The group were taken to meet the breakfast team and had an interesting discussion with Tom, Lynsey & Jack about how they started working in Radio. Jack had to go off to prepare for the next day so Tom & Lynsey talked to the group about the intricacies of how they co-ordinated the music and speaking to listeners using all the technical equipment. They also highlighted the importance of good preparation and working as a team.
Tara talked to the group about the importance of making sure the programmes appealed to their target audience and she showed us typical characters who might listen to Heart. The group then had to create an imaginary listener using images from magazines; we all had to think very carefully about the likes, dislikes and aspirations of our imaginary person. The group also had a chance to have a discussion with the station producer who talked about how he arrived at working in radio and the role of the programme producer. This gave the group a real insight into the skills and qualities that help people to progress in this sector. Towards the end of the session the group had a chance to play at being news editors, we were given some sample news stories and we had to decide in order of priority which ones we would include in the news bulletin. We had to think carefully about what a typical Heart Listener would be interested in hearing about.
Many thanks to Tara of Heart for organising the visit.

EBP Updates
The Brighton & Hove Education Business Partnership team have been working with teachers and students from Patcham High School, as part of a residential visit to Blacklands Farm in East Grinstead.
Students have been involved in a series of teamwork activities such as Square Puzzle, White-water Crossing and Saboteur. These are team work exercises, designed to enable students to understand about their personal skills, team dynamics and the meaning of various scenarios in relation to their school work and exam courses –
(eg. Comparison, Analysis and Summarising). During these activities students will be able to apply their learning from a range of practical challenges, to their revision, coursework and actual exams.
The facilitating coaches are from industry and are not the school’s teaching staff which will help students relate to people in their career pathways, and to provide a more accessible link to the world of work for young people.
These activities are to help support student understand the requirements of their GCSE questions, and to help them understand that taking time to plan, organise work and effectively prepare their work will result in a more successful outcome.
EBP staff were impressed with the maturity, logistical planning skills and teamworking ability of the Patcham High School students.

What you gain
This workshop shows you how to link all you energy and creative potential into worthwhile daily actions that you are passionate about. Use it to find your ideal career or motivation in life.
Why?
Olympic champions often know what they want to do from early in life. Some of us are late developers. Your red rubber ball is your passion. It gets you up in the morning and the next.
The Red Rubber Ball comes from Kevin Carroll. He is a former Athletic Trainer for the Philadelphia 76ers; he also worked for Nike and is a consultant and public speaker through his company, Katalyst. He did not have the best start in life yet through encouragement and determination he found want made him feel alive and what he wanted to pursue. This he called his red rubber ball. He has been pursuing it ever since. This workshop will help you find or fine tune your red rubber ball.
Who, where, when and how much?
Working with Neil Kirby and Steve Williams of the Red Rubber Ball company I am putting on a workshop in Lewes starting on 3rd February 18.30-20.30. It continues on 10th and 17th and costs £75.
About me; I am an experienced trainer and taught in schools, business and organisations of all sorts. I had always pursued a number of different goals and roles. The beauty of the Red Rubber Ball process is that it links these all together into one meaningful and exciting journey. And, for me, the dreams are coming true. This workshop aims help you start to achieve yours.

Hobnob 3: Apertures
Interested in videos using woven patterns of the human body? How about absurdly existential music? Photographic art of the emotional impact of abandoned Military bases? Yes? - then this is the event for you!!
From the Inqbate website:
The final instalment of HOBNOB, this event is going to leave the Autumn Term with a bang. Taking place in the most exciting space on campus, this event has many many brilliant things in it to look forward to.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOBNOB 3: APERTURES
Featuring:
FIONA GEILINGER
Fiona Geilinger makes woven pattern-based and print-inspired short videos using the moving body. She uses effects to separate the performers from their backgrounds, then animates the human movement trajectories. These are scaled up for moving fabric-like repeat patterns and scaled down to reveal individual human endeavours.
MUTE SWIMMER
Mute Swimmer is a moniker of the artist and musician Guy Dale. He writes songs that are perversely self reflexive, absurdly existential and/or sad. His performances increasingly use photography and projections to overstate his point. Occasionally he re-discovers his sense of humour and it finds it's way into a song. He lives and works in Brighton and writes poor promotional texts in the third person.

GINA GLOVER
Award winning photographic/artist Gina Glover will discuss her photographic practice in relation to two of her latest projects Playgrounds of War, which deal with the monumental and emotional detritus of abandoned military bases in the East Midlands and Eastern Europe. focusing on the physical and spiritual 'holings' left behind by war.
NATURE MANDALAS by GRACE DUNFORD
Digitally manipulated photographs exploring, revealing and celebrating the patterns inherent in natural forms.
THE BLIND JERRYS
Folk/bluegrass/R&B, a concoction of instruments, and a Brighton favourite.
PLUS music from DJ Incident, an immersive video game environment of 'Portal' complete with cake, holes in the walls, playing with LEDs and balloons, art work by Rose Morgan, and some tipple. AND a giant black hole. And maybe more, you never know.
Completely FREE and ALL WELCOME!
Prehistoric Brighton & Hove
A walking tour exploring archaeology and shamanic consciousness
Led by archaeologist Lisa Jayne Fisher and Anthropology of Magic author Susan Greenwood, the tour will include the graveyard of St Nicolas church and the Old Steine where stones that form the base of the fountain are thought to have originally come from a stone circle. Lisa will discuss the importance of Brighton in the Prehistoric period, looking at ritual and domestic sites from the Neolithic period up to the Roman invasion and Susan will lead the group through an introduction to the techniques of shamanic consciousness, and a meditative exploration of these ancient sites.
