‘BHLP held a very successful ideas generator meeting on 2nd June 2009 that further developed the application to the Informal Adult Learning Transformation Fund. Dan Shelley introduced the initial ideas from the Adult Learning Group with Donna Close, Creative Director of the White Night Festival, explaining the initial plans for October 2009. This was followed by Charlie and Matt from the Brighton Slack Spaces movement outlining their progress to open up currently disused commercial space across the city to creative and learning related activities.
A big thank you to all the people from many different groups and organisations from across the city who attended, or fed in via email, and the write up of the ideas are available to download at here and here
In order to maximise the uniqueness of the proposed learning element of White Nights the suggested approach is to ‘do something different’ focusing activities around the city’s main adult education ‘zones’ via the (for example):
1. Universities Zone with lectures and use of the new interactive area at Sussex - perhaps with moth walks between the Universities and the Bridge Adult Education Centre - widening participation from the Coldean/Moulselcoomb wards, areas of deprivation.
2. 'Learning quarter' in the centre of the city linking Friends Centre sites in Tarner and the new One Planet Living Centre with the City College Pelham Street Site, University of Brighton site and ‘Slack Spaces’ in that area (e.g. municipal market and other spaces) - this would be closest to the main White Nights offering and offer a broad range of arts/creative elements.
3. Seafront area between the bandstand and King Alfred for gardening, music, sports (incl. Fishing) and astronomy from the beach;
4. Centring on the Connaught Centre and celebrating 125 years with links to Hove Town Hall and Library;
Possible satellites could include Portslade Community College (PCC) and Whitehawk Inn/City College East with events and/or technology link ups to the other events (and in PCCs case links to Foredown Astronomy Tower).
A further ‘Practicalities’ meeting will be held on Tuesday 23rd June 2009, 6pm – 8pm at Brighthelm Centre Auditorium, North Rd Brighton BN1 1YD
This will look at:
· Working on tables to further develop these ideas based around the 4 geographic areas
· What we can do for free or low cost from the ideas generated above
· Highlighting what additionality the Transformation Fund monies could be used for
· How groups could work in partnership to develop these
· A clear process for distributing any funding with an element of participatory budgeting to allow small groups to do something different for £50, linking this with partner agencies that offer funding/grants
