ESF Family Learning

The "Building Bridges" European Social Fund Family Learning project ran from January 2006 to June 2008. It was managed by the Brighton & Hove Family Learning team and run with partners across Brighton & Hove, West Sussex and Surrey. The programme was intended to engage disadvantaged learners, and to promote their progress and achievement.

In Brighton & Hove the funding was used to support a rolling programme of Family Learning and National Certificate courses in Literacy and Numeracy in three targeted primary schools in the city. At the end of the project period, we had doubled the target number of beneficiaires in Brighton and Hove (from 44 to 87); 49% of learners had enrolled on at least two courses, and 92% of these learners had completed at least one unit of National Open College Accreditation, with a further 47% completing National Certifcates for Literacy and Numeracy. A number of learners went on to enrol a Level 2 Teaching Assistants course provided by Varndean College and hosted by Bevendean Primary school.

This ESF programme is now completed, but we will continue to develop this type of supported access route to the Children’s workforce, and other learning and employment opportunities through the new ESF programme which we are now planning in detail with partners in West and East Sussex.
